It is not uncommon for dogs, especially older and overweight dogs, to rupture their cranial cruciate ligaments. These injuries are like ACL injuries in humans, and “ACL” and “CCL” are often used interchangeably for dogs. Whichever name you use, when a dog ruptures this ligament the knee joint becomes unstable and the dog limps on the affected limb.
Because a CCL tear causes significant mobility problems, it is important to have the injury looked at promptly.
Two surgical options
At Trumbull Animal Hospital we provide two surgical options for ACL repair: tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA). Many factors go into deciding which procedure suits your dog. Your veterinarian here will guide you through each step so you can make an informed decision.
